It was a historic day in Abeokuta North Local Government on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as the Executive Chairman, Dr. Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo, commissioned 17 legacy projects across the local government area. The projects were officially inaugurated by the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, who was ably represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, alongside the council chairman.
The newly commissioned projects include the renovation of a block of two classrooms at St. Paul Primary School, Ilewo Orile; conversion of an abandoned structure into a Skill Acquisition and Enterprise Development Centre at the LG Secretariat; solar-powered boreholes at Oke Ago Owu, Ijale Papa, and Ilawo; public toilets at Oke-Ido, Ikereku and Ita-Iyalode; rehabilitation of the Administrative Building at the LG Secretariat; and renovation of the Marriage Registry at the Secretariat.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat commended Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo for his visionary leadership and commitment to grassroots development. He described the projects as “impactful interventions that reflect the transformational agenda of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration.”

In his address, Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo explained that the projects were carefully executed to deliver the dividends of democracy directly to the people of Abeokuta North. He noted that the renovated block of classrooms at St. Paul Primary School would significantly improve the learning environment for pupils and assured that more classrooms in the school would be rehabilitated within the next three months. He further stressed that his administration is committed to inclusive governance and sustainable development: “These projects symbolize our resolve to invest in our people and communities. To sustain this progress, we encourage residents to take ownership, maintain these facilities, and contribute ideas for further growth.”

Also speaking, the APC Chairman in Abeokuta North, Alhaja Faidat Sarumi-Akintunde, applauded the council boss and the legislative arm of the local government for their cooperation, which has enabled the smooth execution of the projects. She urged the chairman to remain steadfast in his developmental drive.

Traditional rulers present, including the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Dr. Adelola Saka Matemilola (Otileta VII); the Orunda of Olorunda, Oba Philip Olusegun Ogunsola; the Olu of Ilewo, Oba Clement Kolawole Omosowon-Akinola; and the Chairman of Baales in the local government, Chief Jelili Oyejide, praised Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo for his exceptional performance, describing his achievements as unprecedented in the history of the local government. The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Matemilola, noted that the chairman’s achievements demonstrate “competence, passion, and a true commitment to bringing democracy to the grassroots.”

Dignitaries at the commissioning included the Vice Chairman of Abeokuta North, Hon. Taiyelolu Egbeyemi, Leader of house, Hon. Moruf Ajani Erubami, Secretary to the Local Government, Engr. Mutiat Agbaje; Head of Local Government Administration Mrs. Kikelomo Munirat Ajayi; All councilors, Supervisors, and special advisers. Others were the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Rasak Dadah; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Rotimiolu Akinlesi; Executive Chairman of SUBEB (represented by Board Secretary, Mr. Olubori Adeleye); as well as directors and departmental heads in the local government.
The chairman assured residents that more landmark projects would be unveiled in November 2025 as his administration marks its first anniversary.
