The Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government, Akomoje, Dr. ‘Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo, has urged parents and guardians within the Local Government Area to release their children and wards for vaccination in the ongoing Measles–Rubella Vaccination (MRV) exercise being carried out by health workers.
Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo explained that the 2026 Measles–Rubella vaccination exercise is targeted at children between the ages of 9 months to 14 years, with the aim of reducing childhood mortality.
He noted that measles and rubella remain serious public health concerns globally, posing significant risks—especially to pregnant women—and often resulting in lifelong complications for unborn children.
According to him, such complications include visual impairment, congenital defects, blindness, deafness, mental challenges, and growth retardation, all of which can be prevented through timely vaccination.
The Council Chairman further reassured residents of Abeokuta North Local Government not to entertain any fear or misinformation about the vaccine, stressing that medical experts have confirmed the safety and effectiveness of the Measles–Rubella vaccine.
He emphasized that the primary objective of the vaccination is to reduce the incidence of the disease and ultimately eliminate the measles–rubella virus from the country.
Reiterating the popular saying that “Health is Wealth,” Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo advised residents to always be proactive in taking care of their health whenever the need arises.
He added that safeguarding children’s health today guarantees a healthier and more productive society tomorrow.
He also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), for initiating and supporting the vaccination exercise, describing it as a critical step toward improving child health and strengthening the nation’s healthcare system.
