The Executive Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government, Dr. Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo, has applauded the Ogun State Government, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, for the successful renovation and official reopening of the Olumo Rock Tourist Centre—the State’s most iconic cultural and spiritual heritage site.
Speaking to journalists during the official reopening ceremony held on Wednesday, July 31, 2025, Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo—who hosted dignitaries from across the State and beyond at the venue located within Abeokuta North LG—described the transformation as “a bold step towards cultural renaissance and economic revitalization.”
The upgraded Olumo Rock now includes an International Arts Gallery, masterfully designed and curated by globally celebrated cultural icon, Chief (Mrs.) Nike Davies-Okundaye, founder of the renowned Nike Art Gallery. According to the Chairman, this development positions Abeokuta—and Ogun State at large—more prominently on the global map of cultural tourism.
Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo also praised the State Government’s enduring commitment to the preservation of Yoruba heritage, highlighting the collaborative involvement of traditional institutions, particularly the role of the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba (Dr.) Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Okukenu IV.
“As Chairman of the Local Government that hosts this historic monument, I am deeply honored to witness its rebirth. Olumo Rock is more than just a tourist attraction—it is a symbol of Egba strength and spirituality, a beacon of hope, and a magnet for economic prosperity. With this upgrade, we are ready to welcome the world to Abeokuta North,” he stated.
The Chairman pledged the continued cooperation of the Local Government with relevant State institutions to ensure security, environmental cleanliness, and sustained development of the area in readiness for increased tourism and cultural engagement. He also expressed deep appreciation to Chief Mrs. Nike Davies-Okundaye for bringing her global expertise back home, and commended the synergy between government, traditional leadership, and private sector stakeholders in making the Olumo Rock facelift a reality.
In his address, Governor Dapo Abiodun, while declaring the center open, announced that entry to the facility will remain free for all visitors until the end of September 2025. Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo described this as a “strategic incentive to boost local tourism and commerce.”
As Egbaland prepares for its annual cultural festivities, the Abeokuta North LG Chairman reaffirmed the commitment of the Local Government to support all initiatives that promote unity, cultural heritage, and sustainable economic development across the region.
